The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is one of the most reliable retirement savings tools for salaried individuals in India. Managed by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), this scheme allows both you and your employer to contribute a fixed portion of your monthly salary, building a substantial retirement corpus over time. Keeping an eye on your EPF balance is essential to ensure that your contributions, interest earnings, withdrawals, and loans are all in order. It also helps with financial planning and claiming tax benefits under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act.
The best part is that you can check your EPF balance easily — and even without a PIN. However, your Universal Account Number (UAN) must be activated and linked to your mobile number.
1. Check EPF Balance by Giving a Missed Call
This is the simplest and fastest method for users with a UAN-linked mobile number.
- Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile number.
- The call will disconnect automatically after a couple of rings.
- Shortly after, you’ll receive an SMS with details of your last contribution and current EPF balance.
This facility is completely free and works 24×7.
2. Check EPF Balance by Sending an SMS
EPFO also provides an SMS-based balance enquiry feature for members who have activated their UAN and linked it with Aadhaar, PAN, and their bank account.
- From your registered mobile number, send a message in this format:
EPFOHO UAN ENG
(Replace “ENG” with the first three letters of your preferred language, such as HIN for Hindi, TAM for Tamil, etc.) - Send the SMS to 7738299899.
- You’ll get a reply with your latest PF contribution and total balance.
3. Check EPF Balance Using the UMANG App
The government’s UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app brings multiple government services under one platform, including EPFO.
Here’s how to access your EPF passbook through UMANG:
- Download the UMANG app from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
- Register or log in using your mobile number.
- Open the ‘EPFO’ section and tap on ‘Employee Centric Services’.
- Choose ‘View Passbook’ and enter your UAN.
- Verify the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
Once logged in, you can view your EPF passbook, monthly contributions, and statement history anytime.
4. For Employees in Private PF Trusts
Some companies don’t use EPFO but instead manage their own provident fund through a private trust. If your organisation follows this setup, your EPF data won’t appear on the official EPFO portal.
You can check your balance in these ways:
- Look at your monthly salary slips, which normally show the PF deductions and contributions.
- Log in to your company’s employee portal, if available.
- Request your HR department to share the current PF balance details.
5. How to Find Your UAN if You Don’t Have It
If you don’t remember or haven’t activated your UAN yet, you can easily retrieve it:
- Check your pay slip, as many employers list the UAN there.
- Ask your human resources or payroll department for the number.
- Visit the EPFO member portal and retrieve your UAN using your Aadhaar or PAN details.
Once you have your UAN, activate it on the EPFO portal and link it with your Aadhaar and mobile number. This ensures quick and secure access to your EPF data without needing extra authentication pins or passwords.
